How busy is Ben Gurion Airport right now?

Two terminals, two experiences

Terminal 3 is the main building and handles most international departures. The train station sits underneath it, as do most shuttle services.

Terminal 1 is used mainly by low-cost carriers. It is smaller and often calmer, but it is a short drive from Terminal 3 — if you arrive by train you will need a shuttle. Add 15–20 minutes if your flight leaves from Terminal 1.

Security takes longer than you expect

Unlike most European airports, Ben Gurion screens passengers before check-in rather than after. The process includes a short interview and sometimes a bag inspection. That is why the official advice here is three hours rather than two — and at peak times it is genuinely needed.

The busyness meter on this page already accounts for it: Ben Gurion's show-up curve assumes passengers arrive earlier than they would elsewhere.

Shabbat changes everything

From Friday afternoon until Saturday evening traffic drops sharply and some airlines do not operate at all. Then, on Saturday night, everything restarts at once: 20:00–23:00 on a Saturday is among the busiest windows of the week.

If you are flying out on a Saturday night, arrive earlier than usual.

Getting there

• Train — about 18 minutes from Tel Aviv, 25 from Jerusalem, arriving under Terminal 3. Note that trains do not run on Shabbat.
• Car — car parks are close by, but at peak times the approach roads themselves can back up.
• Taxi or shuttle — always available, including on Shabbat.
